Daniel Funk

Dr. Daniel Funk is a Professor and Ed Rosen Senior Research Fellow in the School of Sport, Tourism, and Hospitality Management at Temple University.

He is an internationally recognized scholar, ranked among the top 2% of scientists worldwide, and has been named a Research Fellow by the National Academy of Kinesiology, the North American Society for Sport Management, the Sport Management Association of Australia and New Zealand, and the Sport Marketing Association.

Dr. Funk’s academic research focuses on sport business, event tourism, and experience design and includes more than 150 peer-reviewed journal articles, three textbooks, and numerous edited book chapters. His industry-focused research provides data-driven insights that help organizations evaluate customer acquisition, retention, and spending to inform decision-making, optimize strategy, and demonstrate return on investment. This work has generated more than $3 million (USD) in research funding.

Dr. Funk holds a PhD and MA from The Ohio State University and a BA from the University of Kansas. He has held faculty appointments in both the United States and Australia. Prior to entering academia, he worked in the recreational sports industry, developing and implementing sport and cultural programs and events.

The 34th European Association for Sport Management Conference will be hosted in Thessaloniki, Greece, from 15th to 18th of September, 2026, in Grand Hotel Palace.
